Grants of up to $25,000 to Minnesota nonprofit organizations in eligible counties to promote animal welfare. Funding is intended for projects that benefit cats and dogs, offer emergency services and ongoing support of regional animal care centers, and address cruelty and fighting, puppy mills and pet overpopulation, animal research issues, pet adoption, and spay/neuter initiatives. Eligible applicants are located in or serve Cook, Lake, and St. Louis Counties.

The following are representative, but not exclusive examples of projects that could be recipients of Lupa Animal Wellness Fund grants:

  • Rescue, care, and relocation of animals in need
  • Pet population control through spaying/neutering and adoption.

Estimated Size of Grant:

Grants generally range from $500 to $25,000.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

To be eligible to apply for funding, an organization must:
- Be classified as a charitable organization under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code; or classified as an organization under Section 170(c)(1) of the Internal Revenue Code; and
- Be located in or provide service to Cook, Lake, or St. Louis Counties in Minnesota.

Priority is given to organizations that demonstrate financial need.

Pre-Application Information:

The deadline to apply is February 1, 2022.

Complete proposals are due in the Foundation office before 5:00 p.m. on the deadline date. If the deadline falls on a weekend or holiday, complete proposals are due before 5:00 p.m. on the next business day following the deadline date.

The Board of Trustees will determine grants at its April meeting. The 2-3 month review process may include phone discussions, a meeting at the Community Foundation’s office, or a site visit. If awarded, funds would be available in May.

Grant awards may not be used retroactively.
