Opportunity for USA, Canada, and International individuals to participate in a photography contest. Winning individuals will receive cash prizes. Photographers of all ages may submit images of subjects related to gardens. The goal of the competition is to promote high-quality and beautiful photography in multiple categories.

The competition is a free to enter annual competition aimed at garden lovers, horticulturists and photographers alike. The Royal Horticultural Society wants to inspire everyone to grow by encouraging people to share their two passions of gardening and photography.

There are 10 different categories in the competition, designed to have a broad appeal to aspiring entrants and cover different gardening-related topics.

Number of Grants:

The overall ‘Winner of the RHS Photographic Competition 2022’ will be chosen from the seven adult single image category winners (this excludes the two children’s categories, and Portfolio) and will receive both category and overall winner prizes.

Estimated Size of Grant:

- Young Winner of the RHS Photographic Competition: £750 Wex Photographic vouchers

Adult categories
- First Place: £500 + RHS Gift membership
- Second Place: £250
- Third Place: £150

Portfolio category:
- Best in Show: £500 + RHS Gift membership; RHS Medals are awarded

Under 18s:
- First place: £150 Wex Photographic vouchers
- Second place: £75 Wex Photographic vouchers
- Third place: £50 Wex Photographic vouchers

Under 11s:
- First place: £150 Wex Photographic vouchers
- Second place: £75 Wex Photographic vouchers
- Third place: £50 Wex Photographic vouchers

Term of Contract:

The prizes must be claimed within one year of the competition winners being announced or will be forfeited.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

The competition is aimed at garden lovers, horticulturists and photographers alike.

Applicants can live anywhere in the world to enter the competition.

The RHS Photographic Competition is open to all - apart from anyone associated with the competition including RHS employees (and their partners and family), board and committee members, ambassadors, media sponsor and judges.

The entrant must be the original artwork creator and solely hold the copyright.

Entrants for ‘Under 18s (11-17 years)’ must be between 11 and 17 years old on the day the competition closes.

Entrants for ‘Under 11s’ must be under 11 years old on the day the competition closes.

Entries which have been exhibited as printed photography at a previous RHS Show are not eligible.

Images must not be licensed or disposed of any rights that will conflict with the competition. Images that have been made available on stock libraries and that may have gained publicity from this may be disqualified at the judges’ discretion.

Images that have won or been commended or received notable publicity in any major competition before the submission deadline or judging will be disqualified at the judges’ discretion.

Pre-Application Information:

- Competition opens for entries at 10am Thursday 1 April 2021.
- The deadline for the entries is 10am, Tuesday 1 February 2022.
- Winners of categories 1-9 will be announced and exhibited at an RHS Show in 2022 [TBC].
- Medals for category 10 (Portfolio) will be judged and awarded at an RHS Show in 2022, and a ‘Best portfolio photography exhibit’ will be awarded. [TBC]
- After the RHS Show exhibition, a selection of images from across all 10 categories will be on display at RHS Gardens in summer 2022 – dates to be confirmed.

Portfolio entrants will hear during March if they have been selected to exhibit their work for judging at an RHS Show. Medals are announced following judging at the Show.

The RHS Photographic Competition is free to enter.

Entries via the RHS Photographic Competition website are limited to five. The Social Media category is limited to five entries per month. Entries for Category 10 (Portfolio) require a minimum of six images in a series.

Social media: Any image may be entered into this category that is relevant to horticulture, gardening or wildlife. Images should be submitted via RHS Twitter, Instagram or Facebook accounts using the hashtag #RHSphotocomp. The monthly shortlists (May 2021 to January 2022 inclusive) will be selected by the RHS social media team and an RHS judge, and the winner will be voted for by RHS social media followers. Each winning monthly entry will compete for overall category winner.

Portfolio: This unique category is judged for RHS medals and entrants must supply six images in a series, or based on a common theme or style. This category is open to both amateur and professional photographers. See the guide for Portfolio entrants in Supporting Documents below.

Images submitted in the Portfolio and Social Media categories do not preclude being entered into the other eight competition categories.

No single image may be entered into more than one category.
