Grants to Minnesota organizations and institutions of higher education to foster the development of start-up businesses throughout the state. Successful applicants will provide services to high-technology start-ups that will reduce barriers for entrepreneurs and enhance regional coordination.

The objectives of the Launch Minnesota Education Grants are the following:

  • Increase new business formation by actively recruiting and supporting entrepreneurs and new business ideas
  • Grantees will bring together organizations across their regions and build on each other’s strengths
  • Improve coordination and capacity across the state’s innovation ecosystem while creating easier navigation for all entrepreneurs.
  • Grantees will look beyond their city and organization to create a collaborative environment by bringing together people from different sectors, organizations and cities to streamline startup services and support the full life-cycle of start-ups.

An organization receiving an award will be a designated Launch Minnesota Regional Partner that will:

  • Have a track record of assisting scalable innovative startups and working across geographic and organizational boundaries to serve high-technology startups.
  • Deliver counseling and education to growing new ventures in a classroom setting or through distance learning with models including the lean start-up model.
  • Serve as a conduit and convener for outreach to support high-technology business, including Launch Minnesota innovation grantees.
  • Assist, refer and connect businesses to the right regional and statewide resources (such as MNSBIR, SBDC)
  • When possible, have physical space available with associated branding to host Launch Minnesota related activities.
  • Collaborate with higher education institutions, government, corporate and community organizations to create regional partnerships to support startups including at each stage of their journey: recruitment, educational programming, mentoring, connections to risk capital, and referral to other statewide resources and programs.
  • Host events, competitions and meetings with other organizations to increase the pipeline of new technologies and business formations.
  • Collect data to share with Launch Minnesota to amplify Minnesota as a leader in innovation.
  • Meet regularly with other Launch Minnesota Regional Partners and collaborators to share best practices statewide.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Any organization – including higher education institutions - having experience and success in: 1) providing educational programming to entrepreneurs; 2) providing outreach to and collaboration with businesses, federal and state agencies, institutions of higher education, trade associations and other organizations working to advance innovative, high-technology early-stage businesses throughout Minnesota is eligible to apply.

Priority will be given to proposals that seek to serve business owners or entrepreneurs who are women, veterans, or minority group members or businesses or entrepreneurs located in greater Minnesota.

Ineligible expenses, both direct and administrative, include but are not limited to:
• Fundraising
• Taxes, except sales tax on goods and services
• Lobbyists, political contributions
• Bad debts, late payment fees, finance charges, or contingency funds
• Parking or traffic violations
• Out of state transportation and travel expenses, (Minnesota will be considered the home state for determining whether travel is out of state).
