Grants to North Dakota, Wisconsin, and Minnesota nonprofit organizations and government agencies in regions where the Funding Source offers services to meet the needs of community residents. Funding is intended to support basic needs, build community assets, strengthen emergency services, and promote the health and well-being of area residents. Both Standard and Sponsored grants (to fiscal sponsors) are available.

For additional information about the four focus areas, see:

A portion of the Trust's funding is devoted to support for the seven-county Minneapolis/St. Paul metropolitan area. Since the Twin Cities area is served by funders in addition to the Otto Bremer Trust, OBT focuses its resources more narrowly to achieve the greatest impact.

  • Grants in the Twin Cities metro area focus on work that helps individuals and families become financially stable and self-reliant. This includes support for basic needs when that work moves individuals closer to stability.
  • While support is given for basic needs, the Foundation is also¬† interested in programs that provide support or connect with resources that move people toward self-sufficiency.
  • The Foundation is interested in supporting work that creates economic opportunities, provides options for learning and development, stabilizes families, and uses other strategies to build the foundation individuals and families need to be productive and engaged community members.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Grants are generally restricted to organizations described in Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code and to governmental agencies.

An application for a sponsored grant must be submitted by the organization acting as the fiscal sponsor.

The Bremer Bank service area spans seven regions in Minnesota, North Dakota, and western Wisconsin:
- Western North Dakota
- Red River Region
- Central and Northern Minnesota
- Western and South Central Minnesota
- Twin Cities Metropolitan Area
- Western Wisconsin
- Southeastern Minnesota

OBT does not make grants to individuals.

The Trust discourages proposals for funding the following activities, which generally fall outside the Trust's strategic vision:
- Annual fund drives and benefit events
- Endowments other than for the development of community foundations
- Environmental work
- Medical research
- Projects that are primarily artistic in nature, including books, theatrical productions, film, video and other media projects
- Historical preservation, museums, and interpretive centers
- Sporting events

Pre-Application Information:

The next application deadline is January 7, 2020, by midnight.

The grantmaking schedule includes four grant cycles a year, with each cycle open to applicants from any community served by the Foundation.

The Foundation is making some adjustments to the internal processes and will release the remaining 2020 dates as soon as they become available.

Applications received after midnight on the deadlines noted above will be reviewed in the next appropriate grant cycle.

Technical support is not available after 4:00 PM on grant application deadline days. Please plan accordingly.

New applications are accepted one year after the date a prior application is turned down. In a few special circumstances, OBT will waive the one-year waiting period. In those cases, applicants will be notified of the waiver at the time their application is turned down.
